Medication Use

If you are planning on becoming pregnant, make sure you speak to your health care provider about any over the counter prescription medications, vitamins, herbs or supplements that you are currently taking. If you are pregnant and take any of these, speak to your health care provider as soon as possible to make sure they are safe to continue taking while you are pregnant. Your doctor may want you to reduce your medication over time or she may simply take you off the medication altogether. But do not stop taking your medication without first checking with your doctor or nurse practitioner.

There are many over the counter drugs that are not safe for pregnant women to take so make sure you speak to your health care provider, midwife or pharmacist before taking any medication – including cold and sinus medications, pain relievers or muscle relaxants – even if you don't need a prescription to buy them.
